Frequently Asked Questions
What are the risks of abortion?
The risks vary based on the type of abortion. The two main types are medical abortion and surgical abortion.
Medical abortion, also known as the abortion pill, consists of taking mifepristone and misoprostol to terminate an existing pregnancy. Possible risks of a medical abortion procedure include:
- The body not releasing all pregnancy tissue in the uterus, also called an incomplete abortion (this may require surgical treatment)
- An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
- Heavy and prolonged bleeding
- Infection
- Fever
- Digestive symptoms such as upset stomach
A surgical abortion involves the dilation of the cervix and a mix of surgical tools and suction. Multiple surgical instruments are used to remove the pregnancy.
How far along you are in the pregnancy will help determine the type of abortion procedure. All surgical abortion procedures share these possible risks:
- Damage to the uterus or cervix
- Uterine perforation
- Excessive bleeding
- Infection of the uterus or fallopian tubes
- Scarring of the inside of the uterus
- Reaction to the drugs or anesthesia, such as problems breathing
- Not removing all of the tissue, requiring another procedure
Do I need an ultrasound?
We recommend an ultrasound to protect your health and help determine your options. Once you receive a positive pregnancy test, an ultrasound is important to understand where your pregnancy stands.
An ultrasound checks for three crucial details, including:
- Confirm pregnancy viability (whether your pregnancy is progressing)
- Confirm pregnancy location (whether it’s growing within your uterus)
- Confirm how far along you are (gestational age)
