- Open adoption: You can choose the family you want to adopt your baby and remain in contact with them. You can decide how involved you want to be in your child’s life.
- Semi-open adoption: You can still have contact with your child, but a professional adoption agency will help manage communication between you, your child, and their adoptive family, keeping your identifying information confidential.
- Closed adoption: You won’t have contact with your child, and all parties’ identities are kept confidential. The court keeps adoption records sealed.
Choosing an Adoptive Family
Choosing an adoptive family is often viewed as the most important step of the adoption process. Many families are waiting to be matched.
Choosing a reputable, licensed adoption coordinator who listens to and understands your needs is key to being matched with the right adoptive family.
Every adoptive couple goes through an extensive eligibility process. Some steps each family must take include:
- Having a home study – this ensures their home and other family members are ready to receive a child
- Undergoing an extensive background check (including criminal and sexual abuse checks and fingerprinting)
- Providing medical and financial records
- Providing referrals from friends who have known them for a significant amount of time
- Filling out questionnaires about their history, family, mental and physical health, and marriage
- Writing their family bio (including photos and a letter to potential birth parents)
