What is a Medical Abortion?
Facing an unexpected pregnancy often brings questions, especially when you’re trying to understand what different medical terms and options mean. A medical abortion, sometimes referred to as the “abortion pill,” is one method used to end an early pregnancy. Learning how it works and what it involves can help you better understand the information you may encounter as you explore your situation.
At Pregnancy Options Miami, we offer free and confidential pregnancy testing, limited ultrasounds, options consultations, and compassionate guidance. Schedule a private appointment at no cost to speak with a trained team member who can help you navigate your next steps.
How a Medical Abortion Works
A medical abortion is FDA-approved for use through 10 weeks gestation and involves taking two drugs at different times.
The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone, a hormone needed for pregnancy to continue. The second drug, misoprostol, is taken 24–48 hours later and causes the uterus to contract and bleed, expelling the pregnancy.
Common Physical Effects
Physical effects are expected during a medical abortion, though experiences vary. Common effects include:
- Cramping and vaginal bleeding
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fever or chills
- Fatigue
Bleeding and cramping can be heavier than a regular period and may last several days or longer.
Possible Risks
Like any medical process, a medical abortion carries potential risks. These may include:
- Heavy or prolonged bleeding, such as soaking through two pads an hour for two consecutive hours
- Passing large blood clots, especially those larger than a lemon
- Infection
- Incomplete abortion that requires follow-up care
- Ongoing pregnancy if the drug is not effective
Because symptoms can vary and complications aren’t always easy to recognize, it’s important to contact a healthcare provider right away if you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, foul-smelling discharge, or any symptoms that feel concerning.
Why Medical Confirmation Matters
Before considering a medical abortion, it’s important to confirm key medical details about your pregnancy. An ultrasound can help determine:
- Gestational age, or how far along the pregnancy is
- Pregnancy viability, based on the presence of a fetal heartbeat and confirmation that a miscarriage has not occurred
- Pregnancy location, confirming that it is in the uterus
The last point is especially important because a pregnancy outside the uterus, known as an ectopic pregnancy, cannot be treated with a medical abortion and requires immediate medical care.
