What to Do If You Missed Your Period, But the Test is Negative
Missing your period can be stressful, especially if your pregnancy test comes back negative. You may be wondering whether you tested too early, whether something else is causing the delay, or whether you should take another test.
While it’s understandable to feel uncertain, a negative pregnancy test doesn’t always provide the full picture.
We provide free, confidential pregnancy testing to help you get the answers you need. Schedule your appointment today.
You May Have Tested Too Soon
Pregnancy tests detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which your body begins producing after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus.
If you test before implantation has occurred or before hCG levels are high enough, the test may produce a negative result even if you’re pregnant.
If your period still hasn’t started after a few days, consider taking another pregnancy test. Testing with your first morning urine may also improve accuracy because hormone levels are typically more concentrated.
A Late Period Doesn’t Always Mean Pregnancy
Pregnancy isn’t the only reason your period may be delayed.
Stress, illness, travel, significant changes in weight or exercise, hormonal imbalances, and certain medications can all affect your menstrual cycle. Even women with typically regular periods occasionally experience changes in timing.
If your periods continue to be irregular or you have ongoing symptoms, it’s a good idea to speak with your healthcare provider.
What Happens If Your Next Test Is Positive?
If you receive a positive pregnancy test, the next step is learning more about your pregnancy.
An ultrasound can provide important information, including whether the pregnancy is progressing, where the pregnancy is located, and approximately how far along you are. These details can help you better understand your pregnancy before considering your options.
We offer limited ultrasounds following a positive pregnancy test at our center.
